I actually like the first one. The hair is nicely detailed there and the skin color seems better.
As mentioned earlier, you tends to to lose interest in the lower portion i.e. the shirt onwards.
BTW Who is she?

well, here you go, edited the colors, added texture, and details to hair. The dress is bit detailed. I only included the folds a bit and i dont want to keep main focus on other stuffs than the main character.
well, She is a girl from our college, here fb profile pic was cute so i drew it :P and gave her a surprise (sort of) .

Excellent! Getting better and better I do have couple of questions tho,
Did you paint over the photo? (personaly I doubt u did that but the reason am asking is cause the outcome is really close to the original photo)
Do you ever use any outlines? Or just straight ahead speed paint your way then finalize as you are finishing?!
Great stuff waiting for more (;

Place the painting and photo one above other with painting layer set to 50% opacity. There are subtle difference. The key reason why i got it so close is, i placed the photo in same canvas as i posted here and painted on the right hand side which i usually dont do. I find this very easy to get similarity in my drawings. The trick is to place the longer side of photo in contact with what you draw so that its easier for comparison. Moreover, if you are painting something in landscape type , its easier to check relativity between your drawing and photo by hanging a weight in a thread and check alignment of your drawing with the original. This way your paint can resemble like the original.

I do use outlines at beginning. They are essential (to me of course) .. Here is the outline i drew and used.
I fix whatever is wrong by comparing while my painting is in progress. So i use outlines only to get gestures.

Pretty alright, good job on the face!
The jacket felt a little flat, so I played around with it, thought I'd post it here.

You've really come a long way since starting out. I just took the liberty to roam through the first page of the thread and it really seems like there are two different people posting images in here
No, really, excellent painting skills right there! As you have become quite familiar with painting portraits, I'd like to see you doing one where you push the detail-level to the max. In a way that it become indistinguishable from a photo. Oh, also, do a step-by-step thing while doing this, I'd be really interested in your workflow
