I have GIMP and Photoshop CS3, but it appears that i do my work better with MSpaint.
That's the biggest problem... I don't know how to use shadows...
And i want a long name, that can be called short I like it that way

Ok I use everything on MS Paint...
what u need is three types of color for the main color that ur using for face or clothes and hair...

Man, I wish I could just show you...it's easier to just show people...

Making it different:
You can find out by using one of the colors on the original sprites face...
Make sure you have the color on your first box...
then go on top
click on colors
then click on Edit Colors...
Save as much of that same color onto the rest of the boxes...
then just change the LUM *(this is the value scale to dark to light)
Then you should understand the rest...

Keeping the color:
Ok if you didn't want to change it just color the parts of his face where the 3 colors should fit
erasing his eyes too...
The mouth is easy just make it a little darker...
