well, mainly replying to firzenx.
Maybe you take it for granted these days, but back in the day there was no tutorials around, let alone people who can actually give useful criticisms that can actually help you improve. Sieg is in the army and as you may or may not have seen, he's dealing with some personal problems as well, so I find it surprising that he's even online, let alone posting!
As far as I can tell, not only there are many tutorials floating around just in this forum alone ranging from hair to bases to fire to breathing, there are quite a few skilled people (Psykopixels) posting in your thread giving you guidance that people such as Sieg did not have.
Furthermore, back in the day there was no such thing as sprite competition. True, entries vary in quality considerably, but it provides a starting point and a platform to learn from others from a higher level
