Sprite contests. Tutorials and constructive criticism can take you to decent-level only (atleast, I have not seen a tutorial so complex that makes you pro after reading it).
For example, when I just registered 13th Zone, my sprites were... ok. I was fine with them (then when you mature artistically you actually see everything you did wrong before and can't believe it). Sprites contest requires you to keep improving everytime. There's no "Ok, I have reached my limit, let's stop improving" there. Probably a long time ago one who did a decent sprite (today's quality "decent sprite") would receive such awesome feedback that it was not neccesary to put so much effort in improving.
So that's what I think, everyone is working hard to reach or surpass the community standarts.
