Comparing LFE to Youtube is a little too much. It is unrealistic to believe admins on Youtube could control billions of members, meanwhile it is perfectly reasonable to expect authorities on LFE to handle those 40 active members.

Yeah, I know. Still, it's notable issue there with like every second (okay, maybe third) active ytber. I believe they just do not care as they find it pointless to bother - it's harmless. Just like reputation here. You have your own point of view and just because some are over9000repped doesn't mean you can't distinguish their undeservance of it. Or am I missing something?
The thing is, you have your own opinion on the reputation system, but not all people feel the same.
Apparently, for the thread starter (and lots of other people) rep is as important as their postcount/name/avatar/sex.

YinYin's idea of thumbing up/down seems good enough, and will probably prevent people from giving unreasonable reps, since the community here would have an influence on how a person rates another.
