Try including hit_d, the number should be the frame that the ball should go to should it find no one to home after. For this frame, consider using hit_Fa: 10 like John's energy disc.

If you don't want your ball to be homing forever, put a number in hit_a (reduce ball's hp by number in hit_a overtime, balls have 500hp. This hp is used strictly as a timer.).

I'm not too sure about the y-axis issue though, but if you don't want a ball to follow someone on the y-axis at all, you can try using hit_Fa: 3 instead of 1.
