None of the characters are the best, but they have very different specialties and roles. Why some characters are considered best is because most of the players like how the character is built.
Generally, I like Henry and Davis.
Henry is a long-ranged character, and my preference for long range is met in this case. He is capable of surviving in stage mode for very long though (slow and steady). I only dislike him for the fact that he is actually quite mana costly because he loses mana while shooting arrows and his spells cost quite a lot of mana and also for the fact that he is weak against armored units (try fighting knights in stage mode or even Julian... you will take FOREVER =.=)
Davis is a fighting character. I like him because he is capable of doing some of the most damaging combos without a wall, and his leap attack and actually, I find Davis quite good for counter-attacks. His mana cost is considered low enough for me. I dislike Davis because he is poor against multiple enemies or surviving (stage mode) and the fact that he is actually quite slow and some of his combos can be easily broken.
Some examples of Davis' easily broken combos/moves:
1. His super attack ; the one where you punch the enemy twice into the air when the enemy is in dance of pain or has broken his defense. It can be easily countered online (though I'm not an online player) by flipping after the first punch hits, then rolling behind Davis.
2. A + A + A (Grab) A+A+A+A DvA <wait until DvA finishes> D^A OR D^JA
When fighting against some characters (with a very fast jump attack, such as Deep, LouisEX, Mark) using the above combo, once you do the DvA Strafe attack after finishing the grab, for some reason, those characters can break the combo with their fast jump attack.
If you define "best" as in the most versatile character, I'll pick Freeze or Woody. More of Woody as what most people or most experts would agree.
