Great news! I'm at my father-in-law's house, and he told me that in 4 days, there is going to be a new release of Krita!

The program should be working for Windows as well now. The new version also comes with some great new features that can be helpful for any type of spriting. I will keep this post short, its probably best to just show you some tutorials so you can see for yourself:

- Coloring tutorial (coloring, using layers & doing the shading)
- Create good-looking textures (great for backgrounds)
- Here's how to configure Krita for pixel art

Article on ImagineFX

From what I've seen so far, this program is actually better for spriting than photoshop and its FREE :) . I hope you guys have a good use of this program.

Be sure to hit the button in 4 days ;) : Download

I asked him about this bug, and it seems that is was a problem occurring mostly in older versions of Windows that happened especially when using multiple layers. He can't guarantee it, but it should be fixed in the new version.

Edit: I now see that you were using windows 7 before, so I asked about that as well :) There were also some known bugs in windows 7, that should be fixed now. I shared the link to Krita version 2.7, which was the last version that was simply not compatible with windows. Version 2.8 can be used, and is being used by a couple of thousands, on windows. Version 2.9 is the first release that should be fully compatible with Windows and is also meant for professional use :)

Edit2: another great tutorial

Another edit:

I've been playing around with version 2.9 beta 3 a bit.
- For making multiple selections: press ‘a’ to add, ‘s’ to substract from your selection, ‘t’ to move your selection, and ‘r’ to replace(the default).
- For LF2, you often need a 100% black pixel. You can get this by selecting the default brush, going to brush settings, and checking the box named 'sharpness'. Done!

I just tested this program on Linux Mint and it works great!

At first I tried GIMP, but I was already too used to Photoshop and GIMP had a weird way of dealing with layers, I could not get used to it. So I tried to run a portable version of Photoshop with WINE, but there are 2 problems with this:
  1. Need WINE;
  2. It's buggy.

So I am still looking for an alternative to Photoshop, and this Krita program is very close to what I'm looking for!
Many of its functionalities are close to those of Photoshop so it is easy for me to get into.

What I would like to see in future versions:
  • More layer effects.
  • More filters.
  • More compatibility with .psd files.
