Sprites are more spritish
Stuff you'd see in wideo games.
also the preferred companion that Apoc wanted was an animal.
The concept of what is a sprite is pretty much open to interpretation. Just like any form of art. Who says a sprite can not be like a drawing or a painting?
Just an example:
The little robot in there would be considered a sprite.
That being said, in an LF2 sprite contest a non LF2 styled sprite will probably not get as many votes as an LF2 styled sprite unless the judges feel otherwise.

"In computer graphics, a sprite is a two-dimensional image or animation that is integrated into a larger scene. Initially used to describe graphical objects handled separately of the memory bitmap of a video display, the term has since been applied more loosely to refer to various manner of graphical overlays."
Taken from wiki.
So, that -is- a sprite.
What that is -not-, however, is a sprite that fits in the world of LF2, or established and accepted extensions of the world of LF2.
Why? Coz of the size and the style, neither of which fits nicely side by side with the other lf2 characters.
BUT. Its been accepted as entries before, when submitted by other members. The difference lies in whether the quality of the sprite provides incentive for people to consider the sprite seriously.
@Sonic_Boom:
So, like chishio said, non-lf2 styled sprites will likely get much less votes than lf2 styled sprites, UNLESS you can convince them otherwise by making a mind blowing sprite that would not have been possible in the LF2 style sprite.
However, your sprite, is a drawing in a magnified size, that attempts to learn from and imitate LF2 style sprites. I won't say you won't learn anything by doing that, but at the stage you're at, you're just wasting alot of your time, but not all. You're imitating and modifying(magnifying in this case) without understanding. You've conveniently taken the worst 2 aspects of each style you've adopted (magnified sprites, and lf2 sprites.), possibly because of their ease of use, and discarded the advantages of those 2 styles.
Go read up on "proportions" and "human anatomy" online before you go on (and don't ask me for links, just google), and understand how LF2 sprites apply these concepts, or don't apply these concepts, and then try again.
"I may devour the five continents, and swallow the three seas, but a body with neither wings, nor hands, nor feet, is powerless against the sky."
My stuff:
| sprites | frozen |
1) DO NOT PM ME
2) Go read up on anatomy and proportions online. (google is your best friend)
3) Go read up on pencil sketching-shading.
4) Practice by making FULL character sheets. (Refer to bases and references if you have to, occasionally try doing things from scratch. You have to mix both methods; bases and without.)
5) DO NOT be an arrogant, self-righteous prick when people try to give useful critiques, and ignore the ones who are flaming idiots. (Flaming them back makes you one of them.)
6) Repeat steps 2 to 5 until you're happy, or you think you're good, then start sharing your knowledge with your fellow spriters.
7) Showcase your sprites. At first, do not be discouraged when you don't get any critiques, or lousy/generic critiques. Continue practicing and showcasing your work. With more sprites, it will be clearer what your strengths and weaknesses are, and people may be better able to give you better critique.
Lastly, if you think saying all this makes me an arrogant, self-righteous prick who is too selfish to share his knowledge...
Then I say you cannot recognise wisdom when I've just slapped you in the face with it. (Also, those steps are the same steps I used to get to where I am, I don't know any way else to truly learn.)
Unless you think its worth my time, go F*** yourselves. I'm not going to bother to even reply to PMs like "can you help me make this character?" anymore.

That rule is to try to put sprites into certains standarts so they are comparable between each other. That way you guys make it easier for us to objectively decide the 'best' sprite (us refers to every person who is gonna vote, not only judges).
That doesn't mean you have to follow LF2 style but, please, try to mantain sprites to 79x79 or similar. I guess you can also do 158x158, a double size sprite, but personally I prefer normal LF2 size. I don't know about Snor, but this will probably affect my rankings. Probably.

That's the spirit! :p

Tomorrow? Damn. I wanted to give the phoenix a more 3D-like pose so it looks more like a companion and less like an effect for a special move. I doubt I'll manage it in time, but we'll see.
