No real suggestions from me on how to shrink the head, looking at the sprite I'd have said much the same as siegvar in terms of details and too small and too close together (after making that tiger sprite a while ago I see it a lot clearer).
Just a question, how do you do your sprites? Is it using a graphics tablet, etc? Because it looks so smooth and nice to me, I just can't help but be in awe at how smooth it looks.
One day, I shall become, TUTORIAL-MAN: Superhero of writing overly long, overly annoying tutorials which most people probably won't read, but will give it a stab at the first 5 lines!

No graphics tablet actually... lol... I can't sprite for my life with a graphics tablet. I just use the trackpad on my laptop for spriting.
When I finish all my work up, I guess I could post up how I sprite.

A neck. or a hint of it. Or maybe more pixel room to emphasize the shoulders or trapezoid muscles(the ones connecting the back of the neck to the collarbone, and stretches out to the shoulders).
I'm not sure though, just throwing out possibilities here.
Basically when you shrink the head you have more of that dreaded "empty space" of yours, so fill it up with hints of other body parts as you desire.
on your inclination to squeezing details in everywhere:
I like details too... but empty space at 300% magnification does not equate to empty space back at 100% normal size. lol. so just keep that in mind when you paint your details on the sprite.
You might end up losing details instead of gaining more if you're not careful.

1) DO NOT PM ME
2) Go read up on anatomy and proportions online. (google is your best friend)
3) Go read up on pencil sketching-shading.
4) Practice by making FULL character sheets. (Refer to bases and references if you have to, occasionally try doing things from scratch. You have to mix both methods; bases and without.)
5) DO NOT be an arrogant, self-righteous prick when people try to give useful critiques, and ignore the ones who are flaming idiots. (Flaming them back makes you one of them.)
6) Repeat steps 2 to 5 until you're happy, or you think you're good, then start sharing your knowledge with your fellow spriters.
7) Showcase your sprites. At first, do not be discouraged when you don't get any critiques, or lousy/generic critiques. Continue practicing and showcasing your work. With more sprites, it will be clearer what your strengths and weaknesses are, and people may be better able to give you better critique.
Lastly, if you think saying all this makes me an arrogant, self-righteous prick who is too selfish to share his knowledge...
Then I say you cannot recognise wisdom when I've just slapped you in the face with it. (Also, those steps are the same steps I used to get to where I am, I don't know any way else to truly learn.)
Unless you think its worth my time, go F*** yourselves. I'm not going to bother to even reply to PMs like "can you help me make this character?" anymore.

That is a very good point. When I am done with my other work, I am going to go back in and work with this sprite. Thanks for your help.

Practice makes perfect they always say and I have been most definitely neglecting that lately with all my work and such. But school and life comes first in my book, but I have been aching to get back in to spriting. The following sprite was more of an exercise to work with some of the major issues I have with spriting including shading, color usage, and anatomy.
Colors: I have for quite a while focused on using very dark colors with my sprites and I really wanted to try something different and use more vibrant colors.
Anatomy: BP has know how I sprite for quite a while and he knows that I have always tried to cover up hands and eyes in some way shape or form. I really want to break this habit because it would allow me to use so much more concepts than I am normally limited to. Hand gestures can easily make the attack look more powerful while a ferocious eye might make or break the overall feel of the sprite.
Shading: Shading has always been something I have jumped back and forth over the line with. Primarily I would either show to big of a contrast in colors or too little which would give the sprite a 3D feel. I am currently just trying to find the balance in between the two that will give my sprites the aesthetics I am currently looking for.
So if you have the time, please critique the following sprite on those elements (and more if you want to). I am really interested in proving the quality of my sprites and all comments and suggestions would be of great help. I thank you in advance.
Please note that the sprite is not at my normal quality that I like, that is mainly because I focused on the areas that I struggle with. Also it lacks the creative edge I normally put in to my sprites. Once again, its all because it is practice.

Once again, its all because it is practice. well really it depends on type of day u have tht the sprite turn good or not... erm tht how i feel
anyways i love how u used the type of color for this sprite
and yes i can see whut ur struggling with automatically....i wouldn't say it's lacking creativity though...looks fine to meh
the sprite's design is pretty simple the structure looks like he's a bit chubby especially the wide over-sized pants (refer to the right-leg of sprite)
the eyes are pretty hard for me now adays...and even rounding the face...
you have it so tht the coat is hiding the neck part.
I like the hair ~ does give it a 3d'ish effect to it
i can't see the mouth and nose though (too light)
overall it's a pretty good for not practicing...
yes u do need practice...
i'd like to see you remake the sprite without the coat on, and fix the pants (which are really bothering me @ the moment)
keep practicin'

it certainly has a 3D feel to it now, especially on the trousers. It's very baggy
don't know whether it's intended or not, but his facial features and maybe hairstyle makes me think either he constantly gets bullied or is emo
I can see the hands v clearly now, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything?
