For those who ask me to keep spriting, i decided to sprite this guy:
He's a jungle guy, with jungle stuff, a thorn disc and an ivy whip
+10 to the guy who recognises which game this is from.
I hope you like his design, the only problem i had was with the weird looking flair underpants i accidentally gave him. It was meant to be an under-shirt under the vest that hung down, but yeah, woops.
I suppose i could handle critique, but only if its proper critique saying how it could be fixed rather that "It looks weird"
Go ahead. Tear it to shreds, i know you want to ;P

all the complex shadows clutter the image and I see pillow shading as well on the vest. furthermore, the pose and proportions are very strange.
seems like you are out of touch =(
fantastic face though! :]
I did this to you for obvious reasons. You have just wasted a lot of time. Congratulations.
Still with the same joke? ;D - Simoneon

For absolutely no reason other than to procrastinate, i produced these with my brain juices.
This guy came outta no where, i sorta wanted to get a firen type vibe, but i couldnt choose which jacket colour was better (hence my avatar :P)
Also, funky pose because it made me laugh when i first drew it.

i saw Hero Destroyers username and ava, and decided to try make an antagonistic looking guy. I know, not very evil :P
Both are drawn with Painttool SAI, feel free to rip them apart. In fact, i insist.

very nice sprites but in the firen one
the face looks smired/smudghed to his right
and the legs look a bit boneless but i like the rest
the hero destroyer one is really good
all i have to complain are the arms they look like a really fat child arms.

Painttool SAI huh. that's cool. How does it feel to use it for sprites? I'm normally inclined to think that SAI is mainly suited for lineart.
Anyway 2nd guy looks a bit more rushed. His jacket seems to have been starched really well.. its hanging like cardboards off his shoulders... and seems to be making his torso extremely wide.
Also, do you know what Dangos are? coz that's what his arms look like... 3 dangos on a curved skewer.

Go reference some muscular anatomy for the shading on the arms.. take note of how the muscles overlap each other.. rather than having their endings and beginnings join like a sectioned hotdog. In particular... take note of major muscle group positions that help you identify which part of the arm is facing the screen.
Oh.. and the sword is lacking your usual shine...
"I may devour the five continents, and swallow the three seas, but a body with neither wings, nor hands, nor feet, is powerless against the sky."
My stuff:
| sprites | frozen |
1) DO NOT PM ME
2) Go read up on anatomy and proportions online. (google is your best friend)
3) Go read up on pencil sketching-shading.
4) Practice by making FULL character sheets. (Refer to bases and references if you have to, occasionally try doing things from scratch. You have to mix both methods; bases and without.)
5) DO NOT be an arrogant, self-righteous prick when people try to give useful critiques, and ignore the ones who are flaming idiots. (Flaming them back makes you one of them.)
6) Repeat steps 2 to 5 until you're happy, or you think you're good, then start sharing your knowledge with your fellow spriters.
7) Showcase your sprites. At first, do not be discouraged when you don't get any critiques, or lousy/generic critiques. Continue practicing and showcasing your work. With more sprites, it will be clearer what your strengths and weaknesses are, and people may be better able to give you better critique.
Lastly, if you think saying all this makes me an arrogant, self-righteous prick who is too selfish to share his knowledge...
Then I say you cannot recognise wisdom when I've just slapped you in the face with it. (Also, those steps are the same steps I used to get to where I am, I don't know any way else to truly learn.)
Unless you think its worth my time, go F*** yourselves. I'm not going to bother to even reply to PMs like "can you help me make this character?" anymore.

You guys nailed it on the head :P
I quite like the first guys face, littlebob, i can see what you mean though. I dont know what you mean about the boneless legs however.
Yeah, i did rush the second guy, and now i cant un-see his chubby ball arms.
Painttool SAI is definitely good for lineart, and i found it was pretty clean with the sprite making process, It didnt leave massive quantities of dark pixels.
I've found the photoshop brushes just a little too blurry, and i've forgotten if there was a way to make them more crisp or not.
Sai is great for getting those sharp tipped strokes i always wanted in photoshop. Once i figure out how to get that effect just right in photoshop, ill probably move back ;D
Oh, and cheers Siegvar for the references. They will come in handy
I've gathered plenty of references over the last few months, i just need like 2 hours to sit down and have a good look at them.
