hmm, the hat explosion is a good idea but you should definitely change the explosion picture... make firecrackers explode out of the hat instead out that paint-made looking lines. good progress on steve!

i only used the paint lines because otherwise it loses its purpose without them.
it was just a concept on how things would come out of the hat, not what is actually coming out of the hat.

personally, i like the grey ring because it fits in better with the colour scheme

I like the red one actually more, because it is a exciting colour, compared to that greyness he has. Just that red belt-band (?) doesn't look that good.

another idea i just had
a kind of random skill where steve takes his hat off. then a random object might come out or the hat might explode in his face or something. this can give you a whole bunch of new things to do.

or maybe just go watch inspector gadget

This is completely random, but mb add a ring. Haven't seen a lf char with a ring before. Dunno might fit instead of the red belt.
I agree with Lauli hes a little 2 gary red is a nice contrast
