Editing other Users' Characters...
#1
I hope people here would understand it...

It's just that I always like to edit other users' characters to my liking... And I'm very happy with the outcome that makes me want to include them to my mod... I'll make sure that they are of very high quality so that their original creators wouldn't get insulted. I also balanced them to LF2 standards...

I will give proper credits to the creators (I'll put their names & their characters in the readme & when LF2 is loading...). It's ok for some creators to just give them credits. But I'm not sure with the others... My problem is some of them are already inactive to LF2... :(

Here are the characters I wanted to use:
*ok to just give credits...
1. Duke by Hell Fighter
2. Felix & Devetal by Felix

*not sure...
3. Aeron by YinYin & Siegvar
4. Maveric by Matt & YinYin
5. Silva by YinYin
6. Azriel by Azriel
7. Pikachu by JackieRabbit5

*don't know how to contact them...
8. Devin by Regan
9. Iceman by ronaldexonline & Do
10. Walter by Ricky Mok & A01
11. Mahoro by Xiao Yun
12. Grayfox by Matt4300

I created a poll. Basically, I could always ask for permission if they're reachable. But I might plan just to give proper credits if they're inactive...

You should do both of them. It's always very important to give credits AND ask for permisssion.

Give credits is usually enough. But is the DCer very known, then you should ask for permisson.

As long as it is possible for you, you should ask for their permission. Shouldn't bee to hard to reach YinYin and Az, though :P
I don't know about the others because I myself don't really know them / have never heard of them. Try looking in the officials, maybe they're there. If not, well, the really formal way would be to search for them on google and try to contact them via email, shoutbox of their own website, etc. But I assume, since they'd be happy about a bit more popularity among the LF2 community, if you take their chars and smash their name into the readme aka. give credits ;)

I'd prefer my char stay as it is, and not in a mod (coz that might give the impression that it was "made for it"; I don't really feel like having it in any smashed-together 'mod'). If it's just for personal use/among friends it's fine, but not like, "mod by [insert name/group here]".

if you're editing it, I don't want it uploaded* anywhere (which means you still can play w/ it among you and your friends). Period. This is because originality will be lost, and it will not be what was/is intended for it. (note the stolen chars that deviljin "made").

I'm sure lotsa people will feel the same way, coz so much common courtesy has been lost. (The issue about not allowing stuff to be in mods is coz heaps of noobs (usually) will "create" their own mods which consist of really overpowered stuff and what not). Course, you can argue that you're not a noob, and I would most likely agree, but if I want my char to be in a mod, I'll let you know. (you refers to whoever is reading this :P). There's exceptions for some people (you-know-you-can-trust members). (if you send me a pm asking me whether you are one, you probably aren't :P).

* course if you want to play w/ people around the globe you would upload it somewhere for them to download. In this case I mean, don't upload it as a "release" or "upgrade" coz really, it isn't.

I agree with Azriel here.

In a nutshell (to summarize everything):

Personal Modding - NOT TO BE UPLOADED
You are free to modify the character. But remember - you must NEVER release that character.

Modding - To be released
Follow the steps accordingly:
  1. Search for the original creator, contact him, asking for permission to release a modification to his work.
  2. Wait for a reply. While waiting for the response, you can modify the character first because it is considered personal modding.
  3. If the creator says NO or there is no response, DO NOT release the mod.
  4. If the creator allows you to do so, you may release the mod. But remember: GIVE CREDITS!!!
This is because modders have pride in their work, and do not like to see their work changed without their permission, and bad modding will cause their reputation to worsen as users of the mod assume the original to be as bad as it is. Besides, the work is no longer original and normally, the original one done by the actual author(s) is always the best.

So I can just give proper credits to ronaldexonline & Do. How about Regan's Devin? AFAIK, he's long inactive to LF2... I remember getting Devin when he's newly released, best character back then... :D

I edited my list:
*ok to just give credits...
1. Duke by Hell Fighter
2. Felix & Devetal by Felix
3. Iceman by ronaldexonline & Do
4. Devin by Regan
5. Mahoro by Xiao Yun

*not sure...
(I PMed him, but he's inactive for few months now...)
1. Pikachu by JackieRabbit5

*don't know how to contact them...
(Can someone pls. tell me how to contact them...)
1. Walter by Ricky Mok & A01
2. Grayfox by Matt4300

*removed from list:
1. Aeron by YinYin & Siegvar
2. Maveric by Matt & YinYin
3. Silva by YinYin
4. Azriel by Azriel

BTW, I've got an idea!!! ;)

What about if I send the modified chars to their original creator and ask for their opinions, at least, for those who are still very active to LF2... cool
*Of course, if they would allow me to... :)

@Azriel:
Thanks, I really understand that... ;)

It's ok YinYin, but actually I modified only small adjustments so that the LF2 heroes stands a chance when fighting against them esp. to Aeron & Silva... No new moves for great chars like them... ;)

I have also given them their respective AI using Silva's AI copying method... ;)
