GIMP is free and good program, you can download it here:
http://www.gimp.org/downloads/
Paint.net is also free, but very many aren't using it.

i edit lf2 bat and bandit sprites from bat_0 and bandit_0 first frame

It's actually quite good. the bandit stance is kinda weird. Maybe make more contrast on second sprite. Good luck in spriting .

Your sprites are good. You have shaded bat very nicely. Try to make bandit in some other stance. It looks weird standing like that.

i see that you can use lf2 base as well, you just need to learn about shapes, like round, sharp and etc.
