In light of the recent controversies regarding GamerGate, I believe Samus is someone we can look at and say that she directly challenges gender roles for gamers. That we can go about playing Metriod on the NES without knowing that Samus is a girl is a testament to how sex should not be a factor in deciding who can do what.
I think gender has a place in society, but it should not be used to stereotype and discriminate a significant majority that has been oppressed for the longest time in history. Only in recent decades has there been a change in how society perceives gender, and I hope that it can continue to change for the betterment of society by creating more equality.
