I agree on the "smaller is more challenging" bit. Though larger sprites will have their own challenges. (More space means more room to do things, meaning you ought to make most use of that extra space to do something you could never do with the smaller sprite, with that in mind I don't mind things getting bigger as long as its not just a bigger version of the old sprites, but that spriters make use of that space to achieve effects that could never be done in smaller sprites.)
But right now I'm less focused on making the damned things more challenging and more on making the things more interesting.
With all the years I've spent spriting lf2 characters now, I feel that I'm reaching the saturation point. (Where its becoming ridiculously tiring to try and cram in more details, and all I'm effectively left with is rehashes of various design ideas. That and that simple details take unnecessary amounts of time and effort because of their size.)
However, when we change the proportions, alot more options open up, and I've been toying around with various proportional configurations to find the best fit for making more interesting sprites. (Of course, balancing ease of creation with the potential for variety.)
And what i see in your EvoJulian is possibly one of the more appropriate size and style to achieve the ends I mentioned above. With the smaller sprites, I realise it'll be one freaking hell of a pain in the arse to do designs that focus on small details, like lets say a fighter whose fingers are the focus, without blowing his hands up till they're monstrosities in size.
Oh well.. I think I'll try imitating this style of yours and see where that leads me. haha.
