lol, i use Apoc's method (if it can be called that) all the time
in fact, here

(she doesnt actually have a name)
she's the ultra chick from kill bill
anyway, i have realised one of my disadvantages as a spriter today. I've realised that the better spriters of the forum seem to know/watch a lot of anime/manga, and are able to recreate that style in there sprites. I dont watch any anime at all, the closest i can get to is pokemon (how embarrassing) so yeah, i dont also play a lot of computer games either (like street fighter)
so i dont really get general char ideas, i just sorta have to think of them without the aid of previous anime/figters

Lol, nice one Alectric
My only complain is the hair. I don't know what's wrong with it, maybe it's not long enough?
And at your char ideas:
I don't understand what you find wrong in not getting your inspiration from anime / manga?
I did this to you for obvious reasons. You have just wasted a lot of time. Congratulations.
Still with the same joke? ;D - Simoneon

That makes you even more creative, as you don't use others ideas.

Nice one rtxas
I myself am trying to improve so I think this is helping me.
I'm not use to LF2 sprites, it might be the small size and detail involved.
Here's another try.

I think that's more of an advantage than a disadvantage. Unless of course.. you're trying to create anime style characters.
Otherwise.. I'd say not watching it helps you be less limited by your experience of them.
Anyway, you at least watch movies and play some games right? those should be good enough for general ideas.
In fact.. I prefer looking for ideas from watching ppl on the streets walk by than from anime or games. Although there's not much to see in Singapore. everyone's wearing t-shirts and shorts because of the insane year round summer weather. But sometimes indoors you see interesting dress senses and I try to draw ideas from there.
"I may devour the five continents, and swallow the three seas, but a body with neither wings, nor hands, nor feet, is powerless against the sky."
My stuff:
| sprites | frozen |
1) DO NOT PM ME
2) Go read up on anatomy and proportions online. (google is your best friend)
3) Go read up on pencil sketching-shading.
4) Practice by making FULL character sheets. (Refer to bases and references if you have to, occasionally try doing things from scratch. You have to mix both methods; bases and without.)
5) DO NOT be an arrogant, self-righteous prick when people try to give useful critiques, and ignore the ones who are flaming idiots. (Flaming them back makes you one of them.)
6) Repeat steps 2 to 5 until you're happy, or you think you're good, then start sharing your knowledge with your fellow spriters.
7) Showcase your sprites. At first, do not be discouraged when you don't get any critiques, or lousy/generic critiques. Continue practicing and showcasing your work. With more sprites, it will be clearer what your strengths and weaknesses are, and people may be better able to give you better critique.
Lastly, if you think saying all this makes me an arrogant, self-righteous prick who is too selfish to share his knowledge...
Then I say you cannot recognise wisdom when I've just slapped you in the face with it. (Also, those steps are the same steps I used to get to where I am, I don't know any way else to truly learn.)
Unless you think its worth my time, go F*** yourselves. I'm not going to bother to even reply to PMs like "can you help me make this character?" anymore.
